The Debate Over PlaysForSure DRM

For an overview of PlaysForSure and DRM, see Digital Rights Management (DRM).

Microsoft produces software and hardware for a variety of markets.  It has produced and marketed a DRM scheme called "PlaysForSure" to many online music vendors and hardware vendors.

"PlaysForSure" is integrated with Microsoft products such as Windows Media Player and their operating systems.

Given that Microsoft has produced and marketed "PlaysForSure", the vendors which use it were surprised that Microsoft did not choose it for its Zune brand of devices and services, but rather appears to have created a new DRM scheme for the new brand.

I am not interested in buying any more CD's because I can not handle storing them. However, I do not believe that DRM is ethical and I want no part in it. On the other hand, I do not want to download music illegally. Any pointers much appriciated!
iTunes uses Apple's proprietary format, and it's difficult to copy songs to non-Apple MP3 players. I want to buy songs in MP3 or WMA format with no encumbering DRM.
