Meta:Feedback

We consolidate all your requests, complaints, compliments and suggestions here (use the Give Feedback link at the bottom of the page to chime in).

  1. Why do HTML attributes like align=“center” or color=“green” vanish after I submit?

To have a consistent display style, we are only supporting a limited set of attributes at present. The editor generates many attributes in HTML, including align, and you can add them in the Source view, but they will be removed; any supported styles (like centering) will use style sheet classes in the near future.

  2. How do we reduce spacing between paragraphs?

The spacing is actually added by our site’s style sheet; we are aiming for a consistent look between articles.

  3. We need a “Preview” button that lets us see our edits (and change them if needed) before we submit the edits.

Once there are no more inconsistencies between the appearance of content in the editor and that of article pages, we won’t need a “Preview” button.

  4. What is the “This Is A” supposed to be: tags, or a sentence description of the product?

It’s a tag. If you’re working on an article about a product, you should put the words a six year old would tell you if you asked him “what is this?” For example: The Canon EOS-D20 is a Digital SLR Camera or a Digital Camera. Please see Meta:This Is A for more guidance.

  5. I get “We’re sorry! We were unable to complete your request.” when I re-name an article.

This happens because the name you are trying to re-name it to is already use. (We will provide a more helpful message for this soon.)

  6. The ASIN links on the left should show the title from the Amazon product page when you mouse over them.

We are considering adding that feature.

  7. Why don’t I see any of my text from my entry on the Amazon product page in the amapedia section? It only says to edit this “fledgling” article.

We do not want to invite Amazon shoppers to view an article that’s likely to disappoint. If you see this message on the detail page for your (or any) article, improve the article!  Perhaps add a “this is a” tag, a couple of facts, or more text. For an example of an article that is (just) long enough to not be “fledgling” any more, look at this version of the Getting Things Done article.

  8. It’s not obvious how to add a filter in the search screen, or how to tag products.

To add a filterable property to a product, click on the “Edit” button of the product article or the “Edit it” button of a search result, then click the “Next” button . Edit the content of the “This is a” and “Facts” boxes on that screen; then when someone finds that article in a search, those tags will show up as filters.

  9. I just created an article, then I searched for it, but it does not show up in the search screen.

After at most seven minutes, newly edited content will show up when you search for it.

  10. Does amapedia content relate to existing content I’ve submitted to Amazon.com?

Your submitted content on Amazon.com is separate from amapedia content, although if you contribute good content to amapedia and you include an ASIN fact, that content will show up on the Amazon product detail page for that ASIN.  If you create an article from a search result that comes from Amazon.com, we’ll add the ASIN fact and the product image automatically.

  11. How do I get back to the product page on Amazon that brought me here?

If you look at those blue boxes on the left-hand side of the article, you’ll see a fact like “ASIN: B000MNP2KI” with a little Amazon icon next to it. That link takes you back to Amazon.com.

  12. I signed up for Real Name at Amazon and now Amapedia always displays my Real Name in the History tabs and there is nothing I can do about it. I don’t want my Real Name displayed on Amapedia!

We are working on a way for you to pick your own screen name for Amapedia, which will resolve this issue. In the meantime, if you do not want your Real Name being displayed in the historical view of articles, we suggest not contributing to Amapedia until we implement the aforementioned feature. You can also use Give Feedback below to ask us to suppress the display of your historical versions manually (make sure you are logged in or otherwise tell us who you are in your write-up or we don’t know who’s asking!).

  13. It would be nice to have a reminder on new article creation that every article should have a reference to a product/person/company. Articles which have no context should be flagged so that they can be properly categorized, otherwise there will be "orphan" pages without relationships.

    (Yes, it would.  Great idea!)

  14. I was trying to use Amapedia’s “advanced search”, but when I click on advanced search I get results for “game” with an active “video game only” filter. How do I search for something other than a Video Game (such as a book)?

If you want to use the full advanced search, you must log in. Guests can, as you did, try out an “example advanced search” which demonstrates the feature.

Interesting Askville Questions:
I bought a product on amazon and would like to leave feedback for the seller. How do I leave feedback/ Thanks :)
This works: echo "<meta http-equiv=\"refresh\" content=\"10;url="; echo "http://www.yahoo.com\" />"; but this doesn't: echo "<meta http-equiv=\"refresh\" content=\"10;url="; echo "\"$pathdirectory\" />"; $pathdirectory = a fully functional URL. (???) Viewing the source of the HTML generated by the PHP, the one with the variable looks perfect, just like the yahoo one, but a different, complete URL, but it never redirects. ??? So, why would a variable not work? Again, the variable when viewing the sources looks perfect, example: http://www.site.com/path1/file.php Any ideas as to why it doesn't refresh/redirect?
More hassle = less feedback, surely? Why not just have a single-click feedback option for people who don't want the hassle of filling in every field, making a comment, etc.? It's only a book!
