Reference to "Sukiyaki" (original title: “Ue o Muite Aruko”) can be found in the great Japanese novel by Haruki Murakami "Norwegian Wood" - see also: Haruki Murakami and his Music
Kyu Sakamoto was the first Japanese artist to score a Number 1 hit in the USA - in 1963. He was killed, at age 42 in the tragic crash of JAL 123, in August 1985.
This may be a dumb question...but oh well. I was thinking that Veteran's Day is for the older generation of people that have served in past wars, whereas Memorial Day is for maybe all of the people that serve and have served. I'm kinda confused about it though. If anyone knows I'd appreciate some clearity. Thanks. :-) |
I am looking for something to read at my grandmothers memorial service this Sunday. She was 94 years old when she passed. Most of her life she was very active. A school nurse, she was the oldest of six, had three children of her own & parented a few foster children. As a retiree, she was active in her Unitarian Church, swam nearly daily, did a lot sewing & crafts & was definately the one who kept house. Grandpa was very old school & she definately took care of him.
The last 6 years of her life, her mental health went downhill. She suffered severe dementia the last couple years & had been moved from her assisted living to a full scale nursing home about 8 months before she passed. The last time I saw her, she was very incoherent & not feeding herself.
While I am sad, her passing is a blessing of sorts.Being an active, dynamic woman her whole life, she would not have wanted to live like that.
I am looking for a good reading or poem I can share at her memorial. Suggestions? |
For days I've been hearing about the "circus" the memorial would be. Local talk show hosts jeered and had a lot of fun predicting the elephants and clowns.
Instead, it was a somber, fitting memorial for an American icon.
I'm beyond most pop music...a child of the 1940s. But there are entertainers that I love who sing today. Madonna, Elvis, Beatles, Cher, Mariah Carey...Michael Jackson.
They're all fading away, now. |
