Why do companies release individual seasons of TV shows and than release entire complete series? (3 answers)

I'm thinking it is to make more money. Or to see first if anyone will buy the product, a company will release each individual season of shows and when they see enough people buying the season sets, than they know they will make money off of the complete series sets. Would they lose money if they first and just release the complete series of a show in a box set? I have bought several shows by seasons and than I found out about their complete series box set, so I have sold my other individual sets to get the full sets. But I have noticed that there is not much of a difference or if any at all on the DVDs dealing with extra bonus or special features. Sometimes I have noticed some extras in some complete series. Like with the I Love Lucy series, the complete collection includes an extra DVD and I believe with The X-Files collection, they include The X-Files movie. But with another series that I have, Full House, there no extras, just the Tanner house to store the DVDs in. Any opinions?
