Emerson: The Ideal in America

This is the first and only video biography of "America's Founding Thinker," Ralph Waldo Emerson.  It covers the major events of his life, and contains a generous helping of readings from his work--journals, essays, lectures, and poetry.  It was shot on location in Concord, Massachusetts at the Old Manse, where Emerson spent much of his childhood, as well as Emerson's own house.  Also discussed are members of Emerson's "circle," including Henry David Thoreau, Walt Whitman, and Bronson Alcott.

Featuring interviews with, among others, Robert D. Richardson Jr., author of Emerson: The Mind on Fire, and Richard G. Geldard, author of God in Concord, it is suitable for viewers interested in the Idealist tradition in America, and also for college courses in history or philosophy.  Produced by the Ralph Waldo Emerson Institute, it features Jim Manley as host, with readings from Emerson's work by the actor Stephen Newman.
