The problem with faith is that, though a virtue, it is incomplete. Faith can't be the final destination of man and woman. Faith is something we need in this life in order to have the strength of mind to undergo whatever ordeals we will need to overcome: divorce, child murder, cancer, diabetes, etc. But faith is only the down payment; the real cash value of faith comes to us in the beatific vision, the unending bond all the elect have with God for eternity. Born again Christians need to speak out more often about this; by idolizing faith, they stunt themselves. |

Many nonbelievers and cynics doubt that faith is a form of vision. According to these people, the nonbelievers and the cynics, they are the only ones "with eyes to see" while those with faith are blinded by what they want to see rather by what is actually there. I don't agree with that assessment, but I do believe that nonbelievers and cynics see something. As a group they are more likely to see what's lacking rather than what's actually there. Cynics in particular are more likely to say that "he can't be trusted" or "she lies all the time" and they might be right. Those who see with the eyes of faith need not overlook those aspects of things. Of course trust is not easy to maintain and lying is pervasive, especially in organized religion. But my point is more basic. The eyes of faith do provide a way of understanding life. Faith says, "life is preparation for eternal life." What we do now matters; it counts. Everything in life matters. You don't have to see this; you should see it. |
